Blog #9 My review of the Elephant Man

The Elephant Man:
This is one of the best movies I've seen. This movie signifies the never ending theme that people are judged based on appearances. It also reveals that the majority of people fear what they do not understand. One of the reasons I enjoyed this particular film is because John was abused, and neglected as a human being by strangers and yet he still manages to learn reading and writing and always hoped for a better future. I also admire John Merrick because he was always so sweet and easily satisfied even with those who abused him. The character of Frederick Treves was also very interesting because although at the beginning his intentions were not the purest, he was able to recognize this and quickly grew towards becoming a better person. This movie did a good job of showing how one person with a miserable past could touch and change so many people's lives for the better. John Merrick was able to make those around want to be the best kind of human beings they could possibly be.

  1. I’m glad you caught the importance of the characters’ goals and their arcs. It’s true that John Merrick remains fairly constant in his hopes and goals (although he does find his voice) whereas Treves changes quite a bit. Well done!
